Richard Lanakila Heirakuji

Richard Lanakila Heirakuji has been fortunate to have music as a part of his life. Raised in a musical family, he has been influenced by his schooling at Kamehameha Schools, through hula as a member of Halau Na Kamalei, and his association with great musicians and players in his adulthood. Richard has traveled the world through his association with the Disney theme parks and the Hawai’i Visitors and Convention Bureau, sharing Hawaiian music in countries such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Australia, Hong Kong, and Japan. Some of the artists he has performed with include Moe Keale, Kaipo Hale, The Brothers Cazimero, Genoa Keawe, Bla Pahinui, Owana Salazar, and Melveen Leed. Richard also performs in other musical genres such as reggae, afro-cuban, salsa, blues, jazz and calypso, holding down the bass chair for local Hawai’i’ bands such as Salsa Hawai’i, The Pagan Babies, Frank Leto and Pandemonium, and Third Degree. Each member of Kapala has been part of Richard’s musical history in some shape or form, and he is excited to bring these connections full circle with the formation of….. “Kapala!”
